Episode 5 of (R)Evolutionizing Manufacturing: More of the Art of the Practical

Feb. 18, 2025
Smart Industry's Scott Achelpohl and Industry 4.0 thought leader Jeff Winter get back into what's practical in your factory floor tech transformations. An intriguing discussion about mindset in manufacturing today and tomorrow.

For this installment, Jeff Winter and Scott Achelpohl picked up where they left off all the way back in November from a two-part chat, the Art of the Possible in digital transformation and, now, with the Art of the Practical.

Jeff introduced these two companion topics during Episode 4, but to start 2025 we wanted to chat about how to achieve practical accomplishments in digital transformation a lot more, plus answer some audience questions.

Here's partial transcript of Episode 5:

[Scott Achelpohl] Jeff introduced these two companion topics during Episode 4, so I’m going to turn our chat over to Jeff for introductions. So, Jeff, please take it away.

[Jeff Winter] A few months ago, I did a post on LinkedIn on these very topics because, as you recall, I kept seeing the same thing over and over again—companies limiting their visions … simply because they’re unfamiliar with what’s possible. As part of this social media post, I used this quote: “Dreaming without action is just a mirage, but action without dreaming? That’s a treadmill.”

Episode 4 of (R)Evolutionizing Manufacturing: The Art of the Possible and The Art of the Practical

The Art of the Practical, our topic today, grounds us in reality, whereas The Art of the Possible allowed us to dream a little. The Art of the Practical acknowledges that while our aspirations are universal, the path to achieving them is highly personalized.

This approach isn’t about limiting our ambitions but rather understanding and embracing our unique corporate landscapes—our company’s size, industry, culture, and specific objectives.

That’s why today, we’re diving into The Art of the Practical in digital transformation. This is where, yes, we’ve dreamed big, thought about how Industry 4.0 can push boundaries, and visualized what excellence looks like when we take full advantage of disruptive technologies … BUT we’ve laid all that out in practical terms for our companies, in reachable goals with achievable targets.
